A Breakdown of the COVIDEO Review Scoring System

In my last article, I introduced the concept of COVIDEO: An entirely online, nightly movie-watching community which I’ve been a part of for the past 6 months. It’s a difficult task to sum it up in a single sentence — which is why I dedicated an article simply to that!

However, now that I’ve established the where, when, and why of my upcoming movie reviews, I’d like to also establish the what; that is, what sorts of films do the members of COVIDEO watch? Which do they enjoy, and which do they detest? What do the scores I’ll be presenting mean, against a greater backdrop of what those same scores represent?

I’ve tried to highlight the answers to those questions in my new Infographic, found after the jump. In it, I breakdown what the various scores, from 1–10, represent by offering an example of a previous film which earned that score. Since COVIDEO represents a collective of people, however, I felt it was important to represent each score as an average amongst all those who gave the movie a rating. As such, each example also reveals how many different reviews made up each average score. In order to keep the averaging system as consistent as possible, I only included films that were reviewed by at least seven different people. In this way, I believe I’ve collected a fair representation for each scoring range. Check it out below!

With this, I hope I’ve been able to offer some insight into exactly what kind of movies are typically viewed as part of COVIDEO, as well as the general consensus as to what makes a film ‘good’ or ‘bad’. As a bit of fun additional info, some honorable mentions that weren’t able to make it onto the board:

  • Jupiter Ascending, which was Movie #100, was the most-reviewed film with ratings from 13 different people (Average Score: 2)
  • Airplane! Has been the second-highest scoring film watched thus far, with six ratings of “10” out of eight total ratings (Average Score: 9.5)
  • Enter The Void was the second-lowest rated film, but only received scores from 5 reviewers (Average Score: 1.4)

I hope this has been both informative and entertaining — and that it helps to give some context in my forthcoming reviews! Be sure to follow me @dgesocial on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn so that you never miss an update!
